We recently enjoyed a two-week visit from our good friend Amelia. We got to know Amelia well when we lived in PNG. She lives in the UK now, and made the effort to fly to Mongolia to say hello. We decided to go out to Terelj for the weekend, and maybe drive a bit further into unknown area. Above is afternoon tea after we checked into our ger. Keira has taken to posing for photos now!

Neither of our girl's had spent an entire night in a sleeping bag, but they did really well. It turned cold during the evening, but we were toasty in the ger as Chris and I got up once each to put wood on the fire (totally unplanned, but we managed to keep our fire going all night). Just as well, see below for the view that greeted us in the morning....
The shots below illustrate the difference 12 hours can make in the weather here. The one on the left was taken Friday afternoon. The one on the right early Saturday morning. The snow was falling heavily. The wind was vicious. The wildflowers seemed to be coping ok!
We were very unprepared. I had packed sunhats and sunscreen. The girl's had a medium-weight jacket each (force of habit), but no warm pants. Chris had packed according to the sunny weather we had in UB just before we left. You can see how he is enjoying the cold snap by his body language in the photo below.
The girl's borrowed some hats from Carly (an ADRA volunteer who was also travelling with us). Amelia was reasonably well prepared. I stayed in the ger, as my ears were still giving me trouble and the cold just makes it worse. We decided that we would pack up, head back to UB, have a hot shower and maybe just do a drive elsewhere (such intrepid outdoor types that we are).
By the time we got out of Terelj park the sun was shining and the hills looked like this....so we continued on (see the next post).
